Sailing Course Information
Youth Courses

All Courses are subject to getting a minimum of 2 people booking. We will notify you 1x week before if there is not enough people for the course to run. The options are the either to add a surcharge, rebook or we will give you a refund. For all RYA 2 day course we can do them over 1 ½ days for a discount 1:1 price of £300

Youth Sailing Courses - minimum age 8 years




RYA Stage 1 & 2

 No experience necessary - you will go from beginner to sailor in no time!

 Introducing sailing skills and background knowledge to help you become a confident sailor.  The course will include launching and recovery, steering, parts of the boat, basic sailing skills, rope work and collision avoidance.  By the end of the course you will be able to steer, turn the boat around (tack), control the boat speed and understand basic principles.  There is a high chance that you will get wet at some point which is all part of the experience.  Expect to have some fun too - we have some great games and fun races up our sleeves!

 

Dates:  3-6 April;9-12 April ;29 May-1 June; 16-19 July; 30 July-2 August; 6-9 August; 13-16 August; 20-23 August; 28 -31 August; 22-25 October 2018

Course times: 09:00 - 17:00

Cost:  4 days  £300 

          


Sailing is a sport which gets better with practice; you should try and sail between courses whenever you can - practice makes perfect!  Why not join our JAYS sailing youth club which runs on Saturday mornings for improvers (you must have Stage 1, or above) and Sunday mornings for race training.  Please contact the office for details.



RYA Stage 3

 

This course will help you to become a good sailor, including rigging, launching and recovery and sailing in every direction as well as sailing techniques, capsize recovery and sailing theory.  By the end of the course you will be able to launch and sail a dinghy around a triangle course efficiently in moderate conditions.  You should have the knowledge and skills of a Stage 2 sailor and preferably some additional practice before taking this course. 

This course also includes 2 months free membership of the club. 

Dates: 3,4 April; 9,10 April, 29,30 May 16,17 July – 2,3 August; 6,7 August; 20,21 August; 28,29 August; 22,23 October 2018

Course times:  09:00 - 17:00

Cost:  2 Days = £180

 

 

 

RYA Stage 4

 

Sailing a double handed boat, as both crew and helm you will learn new skills and techniques and solve a variety of problems afloat.  Including rigging, launching and recovery, sailing techniques and manoeuvres in crewed boats and recovering a man overboard.  By the end of the course you will be able to launch and return to a beach, jetty or mooring and sail a crewed dinghy around a triangle course in moderate conditions.  This course is good preparation for those who wish to progress to the advanced sailing courses.  You should have the knowledge and skills of a Stage 3 sailor before taking this course.

 This course also includes 2 months free membership of the club.

Course times: 09:00 - 17:00

Cost:  2 days  £180 

Seamanship skills

How to handle a boat in all circumstances and solve problems afloat.  Including launching and recovering the boat in difference circumstances, stopping, reducing sail, recovering a man overboard and anchoring.  After the course you will be able to handle a wide range of situations afloat.  This course is useful for those who want to progress towards becoming an Instructor. 

 

This course also includes 2 months free membership of the club. 

You must be a Stage 4 sailor (we strongly recommend additional practice) before taking this course.

 On successful completion of your course at Northampton Watersports Centre you will receive an RYA Logbook including a course certificate, providing you have reached the required proficiency level.  We will also give you a letter with all the JAYS sailing youth club details so that you can sign up!
