Youth Courses
Youth Sailing Courses - minimum age 8 years


RYA Stage 1 & 2
 
No experience necessary - you will go from beginner to sailor in no time!
 
Introducing sailing skills and background knowledge to help you become a confident sailor.  The course will include launching and recovery, steering, parts of the boat, basic sailing skills, rope work and collision avoidance.  By the end of the course you will be able to steer, turn the boat around (tack), control the boat speed and understand basic principles.  There is a high chance that you will get wet at some point which is all part of the experience.  Expect to have some fun too - we have some great games and fun races up our sleeves!
 
Dates:  10-13 April;18-21 April ;30 May-2 June; 10-14 July; 17-21 July; 24-28 July; 31 July-4 August; 7-11 August; 14-18 August; 21-25 August; 29 August- 1 September; 23-27 October 2017

Sailing is a sport which gets better with practice; you should try and sail between courses whenever you can - practice makes perfect!  Why not join our JAYS sailing youth club which runs on Saturday mornings for improvers (you must have Stage 1, or above) and Sunday mornings for race training.  Please contact the office for details.


RYA Stage 3
 
This course will help you to become a good sailor, including rigging, launching and recovery and sailing in every direction as well as sailing techniques, capsize recovery and sailing theory.  By the end of the course you will be able to launch and sail a dinghy around a triangle course efficiently in moderate conditions.  You should have the knowledge and skills of a Stage 2 sailor and preferably some additional practice before taking this course.

RYA Stage 4
 
Sailing a double handed boat, as both crew and helm you will learn new skills and techniques and solve a variety of problems afloat.  Including rigging, launching and recovery, sailing techniques and manoeuvres in crewed boats and recovering a man overboard.  By the end of the course you will be able to launch and return to a beach, jetty or mooring and sail a crewed dinghy around a triangle course in moderate conditions.  This course is good preparation for those who wish to progress to the advanced sailing courses.  You should have the knowledge and skills of a Stage 3 sailor before taking this course.
 
Dates: 18-21 April; 10-14 July; 17-21 July; 31 July - 4 August; 7-11 August; 21-25 August; 29 August-1 September; 23-27 October 2017

Seamanship & Spinnaker skills
 
A Pitsford special! - 2 of the advanced sailing modules in a week long course.
 
You will learn a range of Seamanship skills such as launching and recovering the boat in difference circumstances, stopping, reducing sail, recovering a man overboard and anchoring.  All this together with learning how to use the asymmetric spinnaker - how to rig the boat, hoist, gybe and recover the spinnaker and how to sail the best possible course downwind.
 
You must be a Stage 4 sailor (we strongly recommend additional practice) before taking this course.

Seamanship & Racing skills
 
Another Pitsford special! - 2 advanced sailing modules in a week long course.
 
Covering a range of Seamanship skills such as launching and recovering the boat in different circumstances, stopping, reducing sail, recovering a man overboard and anchoring.  You will also learn some racing skills so that you have the ability to join in with club racing; this will include starting, mark rounding, how to maximise boat speed and tactics to outwit your opponents.
 
You must be a Stage 4 sailor (we strongly recommend additional practice) before taking this course

Improver Days
 
Want some more practise before your next course?  Seen the weather forecast and want to spend a few days on the water with some tuition?  For example if you have Stage 2 and want to work towards Stage 3 or if you have Stage 3 and want to work towards Stage 4.  We can book you in for 2-5 days tuition.

Dates as published youth courses (book for the level you are aiming to achieve, not the one you have previously completed).

Cost:  £60 per day (minimum 2 days)

On successful completion of your course at Northampton Watersports Centre you will receive an RYA Logbook including a course certificate, providing you have reached the required proficiency level.  We will also give you a letter with all the JAYS sailing youth club details so that you can sign up!
